ISLAMABAD – The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has been instructed to take proactive measures to ensure all hotels in the capital city install environmentally sustainable waste disposal units.
Sources within the civic agency said the directive emphasized the critical need for immediate action given the worrying lack of proper waste management systems particularly in Islamabad’s commercial hotels.
As per the disclosed information, the Malaria Control Directorate of the Ministry of National Health Services raised concerns over potential public health hazards due to poor garbage disposal, especially diseases like dengue and malaria. This prompted the directive.

The Ministry letter dated February 7th highlighted proliferation of illegal junkyards in several city areas including Soan Garden, G-7/1, G-7/2, G-7/3 and H-10. These junkyards, often containing waste items like discarded mineral water bottles and plastic drums holding water, provide ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes that spread dengue, jeopardising health of residents.
The CDA has been asked to issue notices to hotels lacking waste disposal arrangements and cancel licenses in case of non-compliance. Hotel owners decried the short notice period saying significant investments will be required to set up such plants.
