In the wake of Ashura (10 Muharram), millions of WhatsApp users in Pakistan have encountered service disruptions on cellular networks. The issue primarily affects mobile data users, with subscribers of Jazz, Telenor, Ufone, and Zong reporting the most significant problems.
While text messages and calls on WhatsApp continue to function normally, users face challenges loading media files such as videos and images. The service remains fully operational for those using wired broadband (WiFi) connections.
The media loading issues have been particularly acute during peak hours following Youm-e-Ashur. Despite widespread reports, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has yet to offer an explanation for the prolonged disruption. Major cellular operators are currently investigating the matter.
Initially, the problem extended to other Metaverse apps, including Instagram and Facebook, with users reporting frequent crashes on platforms like X and LinkedIn. However, the disruption now mainly affects WhatsApp services for mobile network users.

Earlier in the week, local authorities imposed restrictions on Facebook without an official announcement, leading to widespread access difficulties across various ISPs. Downdetector also indicated issues with Instagram and WhatsApp.
The Facebook restriction was originally scheduled to end on July 17, but it appears the government is either struggling with its removal or uncertain about lifting it.
This ongoing situation has left many Pakistani mobile users frustrated and seeking answers from both service providers and regulatory authorities.
