T20 World Cup Debacle: PCB Chief Calls for “Major Surgery” in Pakistani Team After Crushing Defeat to India

New York (AP) – In a scathing response to Pakistan’s six-run loss against arch-rivals India in the ongoing T20 World Cup, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi has called for “major surgery” within the Babar Azam-led side, according to reports from the Press Trust of India news agency on Monday.

Chasing a modest target of 120 runs, the Pakistani batters struggled to find their rhythm, consuming an alarming 59 dot balls and ultimately falling short at 113 for 7 in the high-stakes encounter in New York on Sunday.

“I thought the team required minor surgery to start winning matches, but now it appears that we have to go for major surgery,” Mohsin was quoted as saying by the Pakistani media in New York, expressing his disappointment with the team’s performance.

Mohsin emphasized the need to explore players beyond the current squad, saying, “It is very disappointing the way we lost to the USA and now this loss to India. We need to now start looking at players beyond those in the team right now.”

The PCB chairman, who assumed his role in January and later became the interior minister in the government, defended the board’s efforts to facilitate the players, stating, “Why the team is not performing is something everyone is asking. The World Cup is still on. But obviously, we will sit down and take a look at everything.”

Pakistan’s chances of progressing to the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup now hinge on winning their remaining matches against Canada and Ireland with substantial margins, while also relying on the USA to defeat India and Ireland. Even in that scenario, both teams will end with four points each, leaving the net run-rate to decide their fate.

The Pakistani team’s disappointing performance has drawn widespread criticism and calls for introspection within the cricketing fraternity, with the PCB chief’s remarks indicating that significant changes may be on the horizon for the national side.
