PTA Cites Submarine Cable Faults for Ongoing Internet Slowdown in Pakistan

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has attributed the persistent internet slowdown in the country to issues with two international submarine cables. This marks the second explanation provided by the authority this week regarding the deteriorating internet quality.

According to the PTA, faults in the SMW4 and AAE-1 submarine cables, two of the seven international undersea connections linking Pakistan to global networks, are the primary cause of the current internet disruptions.

The authority stated that repairs on the SMW4 cable are expected to be completed by early October 2024. However, the PTA reported that the AAE-1 cable has already been repaired, which should lead to some improvement in internet services.

This explanation comes just days after the PTA’s appearance before the Senate Standing Committee on IT and Telecom last week. During that meeting, officials attributed the internet slowdown to Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) overloading the country’s internet infrastructure. At that time, they projected that one submarine cable would be fixed by August 27, 2024, while another would be repaired by October 2024.

The recurring internet issues have raised concerns among users and businesses in Pakistan, highlighting the country’s reliance on a limited number of international submarine cables for its internet connectivity.
