Netflix is discontinuing its most affordable ad-free plan for subscribers in Canada and the UK, compelling users to select a new subscription option.
The streaming giant is phasing out its Basic plan, leaving customers with three choices:
- Standard with Ads ($5.99/month): A new tier featuring advertisements at a lower price point than ad-free options.
- Standard ($16.49/month): Likely an ad-free plan, but at a higher cost for former Basic plan subscribers.
- Premium ($20.99/month): The highesat-tier option with the most features and the steepest price.
The decision has sparked frustration among users, who have taken to social media to express their dissatisfaction. Netflix has confirmed the Basic plan’s discontinuation through emails to affected subscribers and updates on their Help Center.

The phase-out appears to be occurring in stages, with some users facing deadlines as early as June 8th, while others have until July 13th to make the switch. This staggered approach suggests that more subscribers may be impacted in the coming weeks.
Netflix has not provided a specific reason for eliminating the Basic plan, leaving customers to speculate about the company’s motives behind this significant change in their subscription model.
