Hyderabad Grain Merchants Plan One-Day Strike Over Tax and Electricity Hikes

HYDERABAD, July 30, 2024 – The Grain Seeds & Oil Merchants’ Association of Hyderabad has announced a one-day strike on July 31, 2024, to protest recent increases in taxes and electricity bills.

The decision came after a meeting at Anaj Mandi Hyderabad, where President Haji Haroon Memon and association members unanimously agreed to the action.

“We’re taking this step in response to what we consider unjust financial burdens,” Memon stated. “All businesses and shops in our sector will remain closed on July 31.”

The association represents merchants and shopkeepers dealing in grain, seeds, and oil products throughout Hyderabad. Memon called for widespread support from the business community.

“We urge all merchants and shopkeepers to join us in this protest,” he said. “We’ll announce our next steps after evaluating the impact of this initial action.”

The strike highlights growing tensions between local businesses and authorities over rising operational costs. Its effects on local trade and potential responses from government officials remain to be seen.

The association plans to issue updates on any future actions following the July 31 strike.
