ISLAMABAD – In a bold move towards sustainable urban transportation, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) of Islamabad has announced plans to transition the city’s entire commercial vehicle fleet to electric power.
CDA Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa presented the comprehensive strategy during a meeting on Tuesday, emphasizing the shift to electric buses as a key component of the city’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and improve air quality.
“This transition is a necessary step towards a cleaner, more efficient public transport system,” Randhawa stated. He outlined several measures to facilitate the change, including:
- Offering soft loans to commercial transport operators
- Providing special incentives for early adopters
- Collaborating with International Financial Institutions (IFIs) for funding
- Focusing on carbon credits and environmental impact
The initiative will involve cooperation with the Ministry of Climate Change to ensure alignment with national environmental objectives. Infrastructure development is also a priority, with plans to establish electric vehicle charging stations at petrol pumps and near digital parking facilities throughout the city.
Randhawa called on educational institutions in Islamabad to adopt electric buses for their transportation needs, signaling a community-wide approach to the transition.
This ambitious project positions Islamabad at the forefront of eco-friendly urban planning in Pakistan, setting an example for other cities in the fight against climate change and the pursuit of sustainable transportation solutions.
The CDA has not yet announced a specific timeline for the complete transition, but officials indicate that implementation will begin in the near future.
