PTA Warns Against Counterfeit Mobile Phones, Offers Verification Tips

ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a public alert regarding the purchase of mobile phones. The warning, shared on social media, aims to protect consumers from fraudulent devices in the market.

The PTA’s statement highlights the prevalence of cloned or duplicate mobile phones. To combat this issue, the authority recommends buying phones only from trusted sellers and ensuring each device comes with a valid warranty.

Consumers are advised to purchase boxed mobile phones and verify the PTA stamp on the packaging. The authority stresses the importance of matching the IMEI number on the phone with the one printed on the box to confirm authenticity.

For added security, buyers can check their device’s legitimacy through several methods:

  1. Visit the PTA’s official website at https://dirbs.pta.gov.pk
  2. Send an SMS with the IMEI number to 8484
  3. Use the DVS app

The PTA cautions against deals that seem too good to be true, such as high-end devices offered at unusually low prices or without warranties. These offers often lead to significant financial losses for unsuspecting buyers.

In case of fraud, consumers are urged to act swiftly. The PTA recommends contacting the vendor immediately and reporting the incident to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

This advisory serves as a reminder for the public to remain vigilant when purchasing mobile phones and to follow the provided guidelines to avoid falling victim to scams.
